Many thanks to Robert Carter of Philips Harbour, Nova Scotia for sharing the neat photos above with us. Robert decided to recreate a special cycling adventure from his youth 50 years ago, and took this photo from the exact same location as in 1975. Robert writes “The old Sears 10 speed got me to a Rustico youth hostel from Middleton, NS and home again, 800-ish km. I was 16 and still hadn't got my growth spurt yet so the seat is pretty low. This year's picture is my current gravel bike.”

August Cycling Events Roundup
|
August was a HUGE month for Cycling PEI, our athletes and volunteers! In addition to the great representation by our athletes at competitions outside the province (see more on this below), we got to play host to a number of marquis events that are elevating PEI’s status as a national and regional cycling destination. Brookvale Canada CupThe Brookvale Canada Cup (Aug 8-10) at Brookvale Nordic marked the first time our province has hosted the national mountain bike competition series, and we didn’t fail to impress the 185 athletes who came from all over the country to compete! Reviews have been glowing, with many participants saying it was their favourite race of the season and one of the finest courses they’ve ridden!
|
Cycling PEI would like to thank the Brookvale Canada Cup Committee (Mark Weeks, Kara Hebb, Joe Downham, Steve Lockhart, Rachelle Wight and Jordan Bober) and many partners who helped make this event a success, starting with the Mark Arendz Ski Park and its staff including John Mullin and Joe Downham for the outstanding course, presenting sponsor Dairy Farmers of PEI, funding partner Tourism PEI, and the many other sponsors who contributed financially and in kind to the event. Last but not least, we want to thank the 50+ volunteers, officials and first aid responders from the Brookvale Ski Patrol who helped set up, run and take down the three-day event in a way that left a great impression on our out-of-province guests and has them vowing to return with their friends in 2026! Check out more photos of the events below! PEI Gran FondoLess than two weeks after the Brookvale Canada Cup, PEI was again welcoming hundreds of cyclists from across Canada and beyond for the 13th annual PEI Gran Fondo. 2025 turned out to be the largest PEI fondo in many years, even after many participants’ plans were stymied due to the Air Canada strike action.
Aside from offering Islanders and visitors alike an unparalleled road riding opportunity, the PEI Gran Fondo is an important fundraiser for Cycling PEI’s programs and a significant tourism generator for the province. We would like to thank the many partners who help make this event - Atlantic Canada’s pioneering Gran Fondo - happen: The PEI Dept of Transportation and Charlottetown Police for their indispensable assistance with traffic control; our sponsors Centennial Honda, Rossignol Estate Winery, Ted’s Bicycle Studios, Dairy Farmers of PEI and Kay’s Fresh Market; and the many volunteers who make this event happen, starting with the Gran Fondo organizing committee (Project Manager Amir Zuccolo, Ron Skinner, Karen Rose, Cory MacLeod and Jordan Bober), the Brookvale Ski Patrol, ride ambassadors, Passion Elite Cheerleading, and all who helped sign the course, run the nutrition stations, and much more!
|
In addition to the above events, Cycling PEI was proud to support a number of other events in August that really showcase the incredible diversity of our cycling community, including: Ted’s Bicycle Studios’ Fourth Annual Dusty Red Gravel Grinder The annual Strathaganza Mountain Bike Festival organized by the PEI Gravity Syndicate The inaugural PEI Mussel Tear - a 430km, 36-hour gravel cycling event spanning the whole Island, with 44 riders, organized by Joey Landine and Keenan Cook. Listen to this segment of Island Morning’s Mitch Cormier interviewing organizer Joey Landine about this ultra-endurance cycling event. The annual Tour de Cabot excursion to Cape Breton’s famous Cabot Trail.

Dieppe Canada Cup (Aug 1-3)Team PEI delivered an outstanding performance at the Dieppe Canada Cup, showcasing depth and talent across all age groups. Friday’s XCC races brought multiple podiums, including Nathan Joyce (2nd U15) and Gillian Perry (1st U11). Saturday’s cross-country events saw even more medals, highlighted by Nathan Joyce’s gold and strong podium finishes for teammates. Sunday wrapped up with a thrilling relay, where PEI fielded five teams and captured gold once again, followed by gritty performances from U17 and U19 athletes preparing for Canada Games. The weekend proved PEI’s youth cycling program is thriving, and prepared our athletes for still more success at the Brookvale Canada Cup the following week.

There’s more!As if that wasn’t enough, PEI athletes have brought home the hardware in recent weeks at both the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival at Sugarloaf, NB, and at Ski Wentworth’s Race to the Barn in Nova Scotia! At Crankworx, this includes gold medals for Elin Grimmet, Elizabeth Joyce, William Hebb, Nathan Joyce, Cory Jay and Mark Grimmett, and silvers for Gillian Perry and Levi Jay in the XCO, with Cory Jay and Elin Grimmett also taking home bronze in the downhill races.
